Plaza Mayor
The Plaza Mayor is a central plaza in Madrid. Here you can buy traditional Spanish items like espadrilles, mantons (embroidered shawls), hats, fabrics and other traditional souvenirs.
Puerta del Sol
Just a few blocks from Plaza Mayor, the Puerta del Sol ("Sun Gate") is one of the most well known and busiest places in Madrid. The best modern shops and department stores can be found here as well as some great bars and restaurants. The nearest metro stop is Sol.
Gran Via
The Gran Vía ("Great Way") is one of Madrid's most important avenues. First and foremost a shopping street, it also contains a large number of hotels and large movie theaters. But it is the architectural design of many of the large buildings that makes this street so special.
Palacio Real
The Royal Palace of Madrid is the official residence of the King of Spain. Although the Royal Family do not actually reside here, it is still used for state occasions. The palace is partially open to the public, except when in official use. The nearest metro stop is Ópera.
Prado Museum
A trip to the Museo del Prado is a must for any art lover. The botanical gardens next to the museums are a great way to spend a sunny afternoon. Atocha is the nearest metro stop for both these attractions.
Reina Sofia Museum
This modern art museum is where Pablo Picasso's Guernica has been since being returned to Spain from New York more than two decades ago.
Parque del Buen Retiro
The Park of the Pleasant Retreat is a large and popular park in Madrid city center, not far from the Prado Museum. Within the park is a large artificial lake and the Mausoleum of Alfonso XII, featuring a semicircular colonnade and a statue of Alfonso on horseback. The park also contains the Palacio de Cristal, a glass pavilion inspired by The Crystal Palace in London and 'El Angel Caído', the only statue in the world in honour of the fallen angel, Lucifer.
Puerta de Alcalá
The Alcalá Gate is a huge triumphal arch, built in 1778 by Carlos III as the monumental entrance to Madrid, can be found in the Plaza de la Independencia ("Independence Square"), very close to the city centre near the main entrance to the Parque del Buen Retiro.
Templo de Debod
he Temple of Debod is an ancient Egyptian temple rebuilt in one of the most beautiful parks in Madrid, Parque del Oeste. Opened to the public in 1972, the temple constitutes one of the few works of ancient Egyptian architecture which can be seen outside Egypt.
The Santiago Bernabéu
The Bernabéu is one of the world's most famous football venues, and home ground of Real Madrid. The stadium has its own Madrid Metro station, called Santiago Bernabéu.

Directions: Calle Montera lies between the Gran Via and Puerta del Sol. If you arrive at Sol metro station, stand with the Tio Pepe sign on your right and you will see two streets heading straight ahead. Calle Montera is the one on the right. Follow along until the end of the street, and to your left just before McDonalds is no. 47, Hostel Metropol is on the 1st floor. From Gran Via metro station, turn left out of the station, Calle Montera is first right, next to McDonalds.
