Historic Edinburgh
Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh

The historic city of Edinburgh is Scotland's capital and most popular tourist destination.

The original Old Town lies to the South, rising up along the ridge of an extinct volcanic crag and dominated by Edinburgh Castle. To the north lies Princes Street Gardens and the Georgian New Town with its elegant 18th-century architecture.
Edinburgh has a rich, cultural heritage and is home to many of Scotland's museums and galleries, but is perhaps most famous for the Edinburgh Festival, and New Year's Hogmanay celebrations, when you will find thousands of revellers sampling the local Scotch Whisky and singing in the New Year to "Auld Lang Syne".

Edinburgh Castle
Towering above the city in medieval splendour, Edinburgh Castle stands at the top end of the Royal Mile in the Edinburgh's "Old Town". The oldest part of the caslte, St Margaret's Chapel, dates from the 12th century, while the Great Hall was erected by James IV in around 1510. The castle is home to the Honours (The Scottish Crown Jewels) and the National War Museum of Scotland.

The Royal Mile The original city centre, with winding lanes and dark alleys, the Royal Mile runs down from Edinburgh Castle through the Old Town to Holyrood Palace. Much of the street is still cobbled and is lined with museums, churches and historic buildings dating back to the 15th century.

Holyrood Palace
Holyrood is the Monarch's official residence in Scotland. Founded in 1128 as an abbey, it is still used today by the Queen whenever she is in town. Guided tours are available through the State Apartments, the Throne Room, the Great Gallery and the apartments of Mary Queen of Scots.

National Gallery of Scotland
The National Gallery is situated in the heart of Edinburgh and is home to Scotland's greatest collection of European paintings and sculpture including works by Botticelli and Raphael, Cézanne, Monet, Rembrandt and Van Dyck.

St Andrews
About 30 miles from Edinburgh, the historic town of St Andrews is home to the most famous golf club in the world, The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews. Prince William attended university here, making it unusually popular with American female students.

Edinburgh Festival
The Edinburgh Festival is a series of separate events, which run from the end of July until early September each year. The International Festival centres on a programme of high-profile theatre productions and classical music performances, but has recently been overtaken in size and popularity by the Edinburgh Fringe. Originally a programme of marginal acts, the Fringe has become the largest arts festival in the world, focusing mainly on Comedy acts.

Hogmanay
Hogmanay is the word that Scots use for New Year's Eve and it's now synonymous with celebrations. In recent years, Edinburgh has developed the well earned reputation for hosting one of the largest - and most memorable - New Year's street parties in Europe.
