Berlin is one of the most important European cities of recent history and is a fascinating place to visit.

Once again the capital of Germany, Berlin has more to offer in many ways than any other European city. Most of Berlin was destroyed after the second world war, but many landmarks have either been restored or reconstructed. It has a strong youth culture and vibrant nightlife - Pub crawling is popular in Berlin, especially among backpackers.

Reichstag
The Reichstag building is the traditional seat of the German Parliament. After sever damage during WW II, the building was renovated in the 1950s and more recently remodeled by British architect Norman Foster. It features a glass dome over the session area, allowing free public access to the parliamentary proceedings and magnificent views of the city.

Brandenburg Gate
The Brandenburg Gate is an iconic Berlin landmark and symbolizes the reunification of East and West Berlin after the fall of the Berlin Wall. The design of the gate was based on the Propylea, the gateway to the Acropolis in Athens.

Berlin City Hall and Neptune Fountain
The Berlin City Hall is the office of the mayor of Berlin and is popularly referred to in German as the "Rotes Rathaus", because of its red facade. In front of the City Hall stands the Neptune Fountain. Neptune is seen surrounded by four statues symbolising Prussia's most important rivers.

The Berlin Wall
The Berlin Wall, which separated the city was the symbol of the Cold War. Most of the wall was demolished when the border opened in 1989, but some parts still stand. The most famous is the East Side Gallery, depicting over a hundred paintings by artists from all over the world.

Checkpoint Charlie
After Berlin Wall was erected in 1961, Checkpoint Charlie became the main crossing point between West and East Berlin. One of the ultimate symbols of the Cold War, came to epitomize the separation between east and west was the subject of many movies during the Cold War era.

Holocaust Memorial
Officially named the Monument to the Murdered Jews in Europe, the Memorial is made up of 2,711 gray stone slabs arranged in a grid pattern on a sloping field. A subterranean Information Center, located at the base of the memorial, holds the names of all known Jewish Holocaust victims.

Berlin Zoo
Zoologischer Garten Berlin was founded in 1844, and presents the most diverse range of species in the world. Most animals roam free in recreations of their natural habitats.

Charlottenburg Palace
Schloss Charlottenburg is the largest existing palace in Berlin. Commissioned in the early 1700s by Charlotte, wife of King Friedrich I of Prussia, this Italian Baroque style palace was largely destroyed during the war, but has been re-built and now functions as a museum.

Directions: From Station "Zoologischer Garten" or from Station "Hauptbahnhof/Lehrter Bahnhof" Take the S-Bahn line 7 (S7) in the direction of "Ahrensfelde" direct to S-Bahn Station Hackescher Markt. Take the exit (Ausgang) marked "An der Spandauer Brücke". At the bottom of the stairs turn right. Go over the parking lot, cross the street and go into the "Rosenstrasse" - around 150m down this street is the Citystay Hostel.
